Copyright, Print and Web Releases

I am seeing A LOT of people who do not understand the very important difference in these two things so here goes a basic explanation.

When you give copyright release to a customer it means you no longer own the rights to the images. The client now owns the rights to the image and can go into picnik or some other such free basic editing program, butcher the image and say hey "so and so photography" took this image, go check them out. You just lost clients and that one picture can ruin your name. Also, you no longer have the right to have that image on your fan page, website, advertising, blog, nothing without the clients permission. That image is no longer yours, the client owns it and can do whatever he/she wants to it.

Print release on the other hand is an ok release to give to a client. When you give a print release you are simply giving a client the right to print the image. They do not own the image or have permission to do anything else to it.

You could also go for web release. Web release simply allows the client to post on social media, their blog, whatever your contract states. If you do web release I would advise putting your logo on these images and making them medium to low resolution files.

Please read and share this with others. This is an important bit of information to know and fatal to business when not understood.

Stories of Autism - Meet Kyle

Today I had the privilege to work with Kyle.

Kyle is 8 years old, he has a disorder on the autism spectrum, he loves being outside and he is absolutely the biggest sweetheart I have ever met! Our session started out the boring way (yucky paperwork), while his mother was working on that he walked up, grabbed my hand and led me to the door. It was the cutest thing ever, he was ready to get outside. We get outside and almost immediately he sat on the ground and got himself into a cute little pose. Then we proceeded to explore the yard and have an all around good time. He was great with me and the camera and it was an amazing session. I left in a great mood and a rush to get home to get my hands on those pictures, I feel blessed to have met these beautiful people.

Stories Of Autism {Lancaster and Central Ohio Custom Portraits}

Since 2005, Stories of Autism has matched professional photographers with children and adults on the autism spectrum to create fine art portraits to increase awareness, acceptance, and inclusion of those with autism spectrum disorders. Each portrait is accompanied by a short narrative written by a parent, friend, guardian or even the subjects themselves describing how autism has affected their lives. The work is then exhibited in the Stories of Autism online gallery and may also be shown in some of their live exhibitions.

I have been accepted into this program and I would love to donate my time and talents to this project but I need someone to photograph. There is no cost to participate and all subjects will receive a free 8x10 print from their session.

To find out more about Stories of Autism please visit www.storiesofautism.com. You can browse the galleries, watch a video about the project, and learn more about the project. Please feel free to email info@storiesofautism.com with any questions you may have.

Please e-mail me at katrina@katrinagenevievephotography.com if you are interested! Thank you, and please feel free to share this.

My Small Business Experience

So, I am completely for supporting small town businesses over corporations (especially as I have one now). Dont get me wrong I do shop at Walmart and I do go out to corporate owned restaurants like Applebees etc. but I definitely make sure I am also helping to support the community. The story I am about to share supported every reason why I have and will continue to do so.
I was out shopping downtown around lunch time and after a bit my belly started rumbling so I decided to stop at one of the places I had been dying to try. I went into this little restaurant in Lancaster, OH called Deb's Corner Cafe; there were only two other people there so it was pretty private, relaxing and quiet. I sat down and ordered a Pepsi, salad and a bacon cheeseburger. The waitress brings me out a can of Pepsi and a cup of ice this was $1. I also paid about $10 for my bacon cheeseburger and fries, now I could have just stopped at McDonalds and paid around $5 for my burger, fries and drink together but my burger comes out and oh my goodness...it was the BEST and biggest burger I have EVER had in my entire life. This burger was cooked perfectly, the meat and the bacon, the lettuce and tomato were super crisp and fresh. It was the best meal I have had in a long time and worth every single penny! I was completely full and still eating because it just tasted so amazing. Sure I could have got something way cheaper elsewhere but I would not have been anywhere near as satisfied as I was leaving that restaurant. Typically shopping at a small business you are going to get better customer service and a quality product, and to me that is worth the extra money and whats better than supporting your community?!

Prints vs. Digital Files

The picture I recently shared on Facebook was originally posted by Yanman Wedding Photography ( http://www.yanman.com/ ).    This picture has been a huge hit as it brings up a very important topic. Prints vs digital copies.This post is not intended to push anyone to a certain side but to make sure that all of my clients are well informed. At one time floppy disks were al the rage and now they are not viewable unless you have a very old computer or happen to have the programs, equipment and knowledge to extract the files (which most clients do not). As technology changes things like floppy disks are left behind forgotten and not incorporated into the new technology, this happens with most anything electronic (remember records, floppy drives, tapes both music and video it is really rare to find a Walkman or a VHS player) and this will happen to CD's at some point in the future. Fact is a lot of people buy a CD, they upload the pictures to Facebook and intend to make their own prints but time passes and passes and they have yet to make prints. Once technology changes they may never have the chance to do so and they will miss out on having those keepsakes...beautiful pictures in their albums, large prints on their walls, albums on their coffee tables etc. Having a CD is great for uploading pictures to Facebook or for someone who will use it to make prints. Nothing really beats those professional lab prints though, the 8 x 10 on your book case or the 24 x 24 on the wall above your sofa or the album on your coffee table. These are things you might miss out on as technology changes. There are advantages and disadvantages to having a CD which is why they are offered at a higher price and whether you opt for CD or prints it is my job as a photographer to keep you informed and have you thinking about the different aspects so you can make the choice that is right for you.
