Prints vs. Digital Files

The picture I recently shared on Facebook was originally posted by Yanman Wedding Photography ( http://www.yanman.com/ ).    This picture has been a huge hit as it brings up a very important topic. Prints vs digital copies. This post is not intended to push anyone to a certain side but to make sure that all of my clients are well informed. At one time floppy disks were al the rage and now they are not viewable unless you have a very old computer or happen to have the programs, equipment and knowledge to extract the files (which most clients do not). As technology changes things like floppy disks are left behind forgotten and not incorporated into the new technology, this happens with most anything electronic (remember records, floppy drives, tapes both music and video it is really rare to find a Walkman or a VHS player) and this will happen to CD's at some point in the future. Fact is a lot of people buy a CD, they upload the pictures to Facebook and intend to make their own prints but time passes and passes and they have yet to make prints. Once technology changes they may never have the chance to do so and they will miss out on having those keepsakes...beautiful pictures in their albums, large prints on their walls, albums on their coffee tables etc. Having a CD is great for uploading pictures to Facebook or for someone who will use it to make prints. Nothing really beats those professional lab prints though, the 8 x 10 on your book case or the 24 x 24 on the wall above your sofa or the album on your coffee table. These are things you might miss out on as technology changes. There are advantages and disadvantages to having a CD which is why they are offered at a higher price and whether you opt for CD or prints it is my job as a photographer to keep you informed and have you thinking about the different aspects so you can make the choice that is right for you.
